Up-to-date with Schuyler Grant

Source: The Avonlea Traditions Chronicle, Issue No. 22, Winter 1997/8

Several issues ago we did an update on the stars of the Anne of Green Gables movies. We tried to locate Schuyler Grant, who played Diana Barry in both movies, but found she was not a member of any television or film actors' unions. As well, none of the other leads we spoke to from the Anne movies knew where she was or what she was up to, so at that time we weren't able to find much information.

That is, until one of our readers, Sue McGahran of Hawthorne, New York, sent us a theatre review from a New York newspaper. The review was for The Importance of Being Earnest, and one of the stars was Schuyler Grant (see below).

Schuyler Grant (middle) as Diana Barry in Anne of Green GablesWe made numerous phone calls and were finally able to track down her agent in New York, Silver Massetti & Associates. They sent us her photo and resume, but were unable to give us any personal information to share with our readers. They did, however, promise to pass on our message. We also managed to get a number for her voice mail and left messages there, but at the time of publication, we had not yet heard from Schuyler.

Schuyler, who is Katharine Hepburn's grand-niece, was Kevin Sullivan's first choice to play Anne. He was unable to cast her in that role however, because Telefilm Canada, who was providing part of the funding to produce the film, objected to an American starring as Canada's most famous heroine.

The press information for Anne of Avonlea (also known as Anne of Green Gables - The Sequel) lists her age at the time of filming the sequel as sixteen, and says that after filming wrapped up, Schuyler would be returning to California to finish high school.

A copy of the article sent to us by Sue McGahran of Hawthorne, New yorkHere's the information which her agent graciously provided to bring us up-to-date. After graduating from high school, Schuyler went to Columbia University where she majored in history, with theatre as her minor.

Besides appearing in The Importance of Being Earnest at the Irish Rep Theatre in New York City from October to December 22, 1996, Schuyler has appeared in a number of theatre productions, including the role of Lady Macbeth in Shakespeare's Macbeth for the prestigious Tribeca Lab in N.Y.C., Sally in Le Lecon which toured through Europe, Viola in Twelfth Night for Shakespeare in the Park in California and Sarah in Children of a Lesser God at the Western Union Theatre in California.

On television, Schuyler has appeared in an episode of Law & Order and in a Movie-of-the-Week called Laura Lansing Slept Here, with her grand-aunt, Katharine Hepburn. Recently, Schuyler began a continuing role on the daytime soap opera All My Children, playing a character by the name of Camille.

On a more personal note, Schuyler speaks French and Spanish, knows American Sign Language and lives in New York City.

Editor's Note: Since then Schuyler has gone on to reprise her role as Diana in Anne of Green Gables, The Continuing Story, available on video.
